Moving home not mountains

How to give yourself a stress and clutter free clean slate

Moving home is stressful enough without having filter and pack all that junk you’re storing in the loft and the garage. Give yourself a break!

Despite lockdown, we’re still moving: the UK property market has been on the rise since last July[i]. Fuelled in part by the stamp duty cuts, due to end on 31st March this year, but probably also has by the need for our homes need to be much more than just a living space now:

More of us are working from home than ever before and could be for the foreseeable future.

We all hope that we never have to rise to the challenge of home schooling again, but the need to provide space for a classroom may certainly have motivated some to search for a larger property.

We may also go to the gym less post lockdown, opting instead for the great outdoors or exercising at home. Again, we need extra space for yoga, a gym or more bikes.

There’s been a mass exodus from London[ii] as homeowners search for property closer to family or simply closer to the country. And there’s been an increase in intergenerational purchases as families have decided to move in together[iii].

It can be difficult to envisage numerous uses for different spaces and how new additions to the household are going to fit. So, what’s the best way to remove the inevitable stress this will cause?

One piece of advice that’s always given is to declutter before moving:

  • sell or donate unwanted items
  • anything you haven’t used for six or 12 months, get rid of
  • if it doesn’t bring you ‘joy’, remove it from your life

Sound familiar?

That’s all well and good but you’re searching for a new home, trying to satisfy multiple family members and at the same time as balancing work with home schooling and keeping fit with school holiday activity planning. Decluttering, selling and donating is the last thing you’ve got time for!

For the sake of your sanity, use self-storage. Woodpecker offers options from just £15 a week. If you’re not going to need it immediately or if you’re unsure where it’s going to fit in your new home, just pop it into storage.

Contracts are flexible, sites are secure and you can access your belongings whenever you like.

Give yourself time to fall in love with your new home. Settle in and decide how you’re going to live in it. Then, later on, perhaps when life has returned to some semblance of normality, and when you’ve had a chance to properly live and relax in your new home, begin to bring things back.

Allow yourself space to breathe, relax and live in your house, let Woodpecker help you. Contact us on 0808 281 3333 for more information today.
